DMX512 vs Art-Net vs sACN: What Stage Lighting Buyers Need to Know

A plain-language explanation of DMX512, RDM, Art-Net and sACN for distributors and integrators specifying stage lighting systems.

Every professional fixture speaks DMX512, but larger shows move control data over Ethernet. Understanding the difference helps you sell complete systems, not just lights.

DMX512 and RDM

DMX512 carries 512 channels per universe over XLR cable. RDM adds two-way communication so technicians can address and monitor fixtures remotely.

Art-Net

Art-Net carries many DMX universes over a standard network. It is widely supported by consoles and media servers.

sACN (E1.31)

sACN uses multicast, which scales well on large networks when switches are configured with IGMP snooping.

What to ask your supplier

  • Does the fixture accept Art-Net/sACN directly or need a node?
  • Is RDM supported?
  • Are console fixture libraries available?
